I would like to share a true story with you: My Father was one of the first 5 men to become a certified sea captain in Miami – he was only 16 years old! During World War II he piloted a tugboat at “night” hauling 100% high octane gas from Miami to the Key West Naval Base – fuel for the war ships! These shipments of gasoline had to be handled at night in complete darkness. Therefore, there were not any lights coming or going on the tugboat and what it was pulling! This alone was very dangerous! With no lights other vessels did not have any awareness of another vessel in the water! The no-lights order had to be kept in order to not call attention to the transfer of the much needed fuel for the ships! During the war years most people in south Florida were not aware of the presence of German subs and ships off the coast! However, they were there because on the weekends when given shore leave – the German soldiers came boldly a shore to Miami and went to movies!! And that is a fact!
After the war my Daddy began to work as a Captain on private yachts. Over his lifetime he worked for many, many wealthy people! His reputation was a stellar one and there were times he actually had to turn jobs down! He told me many stories during my growing up years – I was fascinated! I can’t begin to tell you how proud of him I was and still am. Daddy was a skilled master at his craft!
My Dad had a best friend who was like a brother to him – his sister’s husband! My uncle was also a stellar licensed Captain – the two friends/brothers helped each other on many occasions and in many ways! They had a great deal of things in common including their love for the Lord! I loved to listen to some of their conversations! You could tell they had a great deal of respect for each other. Right Karolee?
At one point in his career Daddy was working for the founder and CEO of a very prominent and popular soft drink company. The owner happened to be in town one day and called my Dad stating “Get the boat ready I want to go out and fish!” My father told him that was not a good idea because there was a storm coming. Now, my Dad knew they would be ok – BUT! They were not going to be able to fish much less catch anything! Plus, due to the approaching storm there was going to be very rough seas! Long story short after much discussion between Boss and employee they boarded the boat and went out in the ocean. The weather began to worsen and the CEO’s anger began to build because he couldn’t fish and the boat was really rocking! Then out of the dark sky came heavy rain and fierce lighting! The CEO was furious! – At this point he positioned himself at the stern of the boat and raised his fist to the dark sky, and with lightning crashing all around he began cursing God! Not just a few words – he took it to the max! When my Dad saw and heard this he told me that was enough! It was at this point Daddy without any discussion immediately turned the boat around and headed back to shore! The man who controlled a billion dollar company couldn’t control the weather – so he blamed God!
NOW, this man knew better than to act like he did. He was told the storm was coming and yet he demanded to go anyway – he knew what he was doing was against his better judgement – it was wrong! Here is the point of this post: When we know better and we continue on doing something willfully and willingly knowing that it’s wrong – we are sinning with a “high hand”! In God’s eye’s – this action is the same as making a fist and raising that fist to the sky! Friends, when we take things this far we are treading in the “unpardonable sin zone” – think about it!
When a person recognizes and knows they are acting, reacting, thinking, doing, perceiving or believing something that is wrong it is at that point they become responsible for that action, belief, habit or perception! It is at this point they can no longer blame anyone for what they are thinking or doing! No matter who taught them what by words, action, and reaction or by example – they are totally responsible for it!
This is called accountability! It is at this point the blame game is over in the eyes of man and most assuredly in the eyes of God! Why? Because, you know better!
“For if we deliberately continue to sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but only the terrifying prospect of Judgment, of raging fire that will consume the enemies…”
“It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!” Hebrews 10:26-27; 31(CJB)
